Mini quilt

In an attempt to use up scraps, I decided try quilting and I enjoyed it! I found the repetition of sewing up the squares surprisingly relaxing, and I’m happy with the end result.

The fabric:

I’ve been storing my scraps from different projects, and for this I rooted through to find the smallest pieces. I picked out ones which were reds and browns, then cut them up into 1.5 inch squares.

The pattern:

I based the design on a bag from the Wabi-Sabi Sewing book, but I decided not to sew it up in the same way the author suggests. Instead I followed this video guide:

The method stitches the squares together in a long line (columns, going from top to bottom) with a few empty stitches in between each one. In the video Melanie cuts them apart afterwards, but I didn’t see the need to. Leaving them together meant it kept them in order while I sewed the rows together.

The challenges:

Momo, our cat! All the tiny well-ordered stacked squares of material were too much fun for her to resist. She kicked them off the table, which was really frustrating because it meant I had to redo all the stacks. It did make Momo happy though.

The final result:

So I’ve made a cute mini-quilt, but now I don’t know what to do with it! If you have any ideas let me know. I might make it into a cushion, or perhaps a bag, but I’ll decide later.

It’s great to have made something useful out of what otherwise would have been difficult-to-repurpose small fabric scraps. I enjoyed the quilting process, and I feel like I’ve created something out of nothing.
