I woke up on Saturday morning, ready to do some sewing, but then I heard rattling… In the bottom of my sewing drawer there were loads of needles, pins and safety pins – some far too rusty to use! So I decided it was a good time for a tidy up.
After sorting it all out, I had a pile of large needles too big for my needle box, and a pile of safety pins in need of a new home. So I decided to make a needle book out of fabric scrap.
The fabric:
Left over dark red organic cotton from making the Heron Top (the very last few bits!); some fabric from curtains I had shortened, and fabric from an old roller blind (for interfacing).
The pattern:
I used an old pin book as a template, and made up the rest. Ideally I would have made the pages out of felt but I didn’t have any, so I had to finish the edges which made them a bit bulky. The curtain fabric had pretty flowers I decided to use for the main cover, and the red cotton for the inside.
The challenges:
I was intending to use ribbon to tie the book together, but unfortunately one of them slipped free from the seam after I’d finished. So I changed the fastening to a button and loop, which I think I actually like better!
The final result:
I have a needle book and my pins and needles are all tidy, hurrah! The pages are a bit messy, so if I get some felt I might replace them at some point. But overall I’m very happy with my new tidy needles and pins book.
