Pattern weights

A quick, easy, and fun project – I really enjoyed making these, and they’re really handy too!

The fabric:

Another great way to use up scrap fabric: for the top I used curtain fabric cut-offs and for the bottom I used left over fabric from covering our sofa. The pattern only requires x2 3.5 inch squares for each weight, so it really is perfect for using up scrap!

The pattern:

I looked at a few designs, the most popular seems to be little pyramids which I assume is because you can fit lots of rice/weight in to make them heavy. I also saw some little barrels and even made one, but it was really fiddly and had a tendency to fall over.

I decided to make these flat weights with a square in the middle which forces the weight around the outer edge, because it makes them sit nice and flat.

You cut your material into 3.5 in inches square, sew right sides together around the edge but make sure to leave a gap to turn it right way out. Once turned right way out, sew a 1 inch square in the middle, fill with weight, then hand sew the gap closed. See? Super easy.

The tutorial I used is here:

The challenges:

The only downside to these is there isn’t much volume for the weight. The tutorial suggests using ball bearings, but I didn’t have any of those so I used rice. Consequently they were a little light, so I sewed a washer to the underside of the square to make them nice and heavy.

The final result:

I’m super happy with these! Such an easy sew and they work perfectly. I definitely recommend these to use up fabric scrap.
