Jersey! That’s my hope at least. I wear a lot of jersey clothes and it would be great to be able to sew them. But my vintage Singer can only do straight stitches…
After a lot of puzzling and searching lots of blogs and websites, I think I have the solution:
1) Mettler seraflock thread – apparently this thread is stretchy enough that you can sew jersey with a straight stitch
2) A walking foot – so this is a bit more tricky. Singer did make vintage walking feet, there’s one called The Penguin because of how it walks – how cute is that?! But I’m having a bit of trouble sourcing one. Tilly says on her blog that if the jersey isn’t too stretchy you can instead reduce the pressure on a standard foot. So I’ll try that for now.
3) Jersey needles. Lots of blogs say these help, so I’m going to buy some to add to my needle collection.
Hopefully the combination of these things will mean I can sew jersey, but I won’t know for sure until I try!
For my first jersey make I’ve bought some navy blue jersey from Croft Mill, a company that sells odds and ends from manufacturers. It’s lovely stuff, incredibly soft and drapes well. I’ve also bought this sleepwear New Look pattern:

Now I can’t wait to get started! I think I’ll try the vest top first…
