I can’t stop making these Cielo tops! They are just so comfortable, flattering, and perfect for this time of year. This time I decided to make the version with the big sleeves and cuffs. I’m so happy with how this has turned out.
1. The fabric
This fabric was such a bargain! It was £5 a metre, and I bought it from Abakhan. Because it was so cheap and lovely I ended up buying 4m, and I’ve decided to make my mum a Cielo top out of it as well. It’s described as a viscose poplin, and I think it is slightly more sturdy than the viscose I have sewn with in the past, but it is still extremely drapey. I love the pattern with the ferns and big flowers, it puts a big smile on my face.
2. The pattern
I’ve made this pattern two times before, so I don’t have much to add here, other than I retained fitting adjustments I had done for my second Cielo top (lowered bust dart by 1/2″ and moved outwards by 1/2″, narrow shoulder adjustment 1/2″), and I made this version about 3 inches longer to see how it would feel. I made it with the bias bound neckline as I really like it as a finish.
3. The challenges
Cutting out this fabric was the main challenge. Because I had bought so much of it, and it was so slippery, it was really hard to keep control of it! I ended up taking over the kitchen table and using a chalk marker to trace the outline of the pieces before then cutting them out, and this seemed to work well. It took me absolutely ages to do though.
The actual sewing was a breeze, and really satisfying to do. Having made so many of these recently I barely had to look at the pattern instructions and I had a lovely day sewing this all together.
4. The final result
I love, love, love this top! It’s so comfortable, it’s quite easy to dress up or down, I have lots of other clothes that it matches well with because of the colours in the top, and it’s perfect for this time of year. I think this Cielo top is my favourite. Now I just need to make one for my mum.
It’s lovely! I’ve made one cielo but plan to make more. Love that you’re going to make one for your mom…I’m inspired.

Thanks Gillian! It’s such a great pattern, and delightfully simple to sew. I’ve already made a trial one for my mum and it almost fit perfectly (the loose fit definitely helps) but I’m going to make a few tweaks for the final version, hopefully I’ll finish it in time for her birthday!
